From Shanghai to Barcelona via Cairo
Date of travel: April 30 – May 1, 2024
Route: Shanghai Pudong (PVG) → Cairo (CAI) → Barcelona (BCN)
Airline: EgyptAir – Economy Class
I flew EgyptAir for the first time, on a red-eye flight from Shanghai to Barcelona with a layover in Cairo.
The journey started on April 30 at night, and I landed in Barcelona on May 1st.
The flight itself was peaceful and surprisingly comfortable, especially for a budget-conscious option on a long-haul trip.
I had around 2 hours of layover in Cairo, which turned out to be just enough.
There’s a lot of confusion online about whether a transit visa is required.
👉 No, I didn’t need a visa, because I stayed inside the airport and didn’t exit immigration.
That said — get ready to ride a bus for what feels like forever across the tarmac between terminals. 😅
I honestly felt like I was going into the city, not just to another gate.
There was enough time for a quick coffee, but not much more. You’ll also go through another security check in Cairo during your transit, so plan accordingly.
The flight was an overnight red-eye, and the cabin was very quiet and calm.
Most people were asleep, and even the flight attendants didn’t walk around much — which made the flight feel peaceful.
Seats were average for economy. Not too tight, but don’t expect anything spacious either. A pillow and blanket were provided.
The first meal came around 2 AM — not exactly prime dining time, but I was hungry! 😆
It was pasta with chicken underneath, and honestly, I was impressed.
It tasted better than expected, and the portion was just right for a night flight.
I didn’t get many photos because I was too sleepy, but the overall meal experience was satisfying.
Would I fly EgyptAir Economy again?
✅ Yes, if the route and price are good.
It was quiet, clean, and comfortable enough, especially for a red-eye.
Pros:
Cons:
If you’re worried about the Cairo visa, don’t be — as long as you stay inside the airport, you’re fine!
